Meet Mr. Hughes
I was born in Salt Lake City and raised in a part of the valley that is now called Taylorsville. I graduated from West Jordan High School in 1988 (way before you were born). I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Weber State University and a Master's Degree in Educational Technology from Utah State University. In August 2007 I completed the requirements for my Administrative/Supervisory Endorsement at USU.
While attending Weber State I met my wife, Lisa. She was also an education major and grew up in Clinton, Utah. We have three children. Connor is 23 years old and currently attends Weber State University. He married the love of his life, Olivia, in January 2019. Connor graduated from Layton High School in 2014 and loves art and playing soccer. He hopes to become a dentist. Our daughter, Katelyn, is 21 and lived in the Philippines until May 2019. She is also an avid soccer player and loves photography and movie making. She's also attending Weber State but is undecided on a major. Our youngest child is a son named Landon. He is 15 and a junior at Layton High. He loves soccer, basketball and playing video games.
I am honored to be the principal of Lucile C. Reading Elementary School. This will be my 4th year at this wonderful school and I hope to continue the great things happening here. Prior to working at Reading I was principal of Columbia Elementary for six years, and before that spent four years as an elementary administrative intern at Kaysville, Heritage and Valley View. My teaching background includes all grades from 3rd to 6th during my twelve years in the classroom. I taught at Riverside Elementary in Jordan School District for two years, Hannah Holbrook Elementary in Bountiful for five years and Kaysville Elementary for five years. I loved teaching school, especially my time in fourth grade. It has been a fun and challenging change for me to move to this administrative role. I am grateful for the wonderful faculty members at Reading Elementary who have given me a warm welcome and am excited to get to know the students and parent community better during the upcoming school year.
In my spare time, I love to relax with my family, read (especially children’s books) and travel. Our family's favorite vacation spots (so far) have been Yellowstone Park, the Oregon coast, the Redwoods, Mount Rushmore and a trip to Hawaii with extended family. Our most recent adventure was a trip to San Diego where I learned to ride a Segway and enjoyed the good Mexican food in Old Town.
